Selling a Claude Skill on Gumroad vs hosting it: which is right for you?

Gumroad is the easiest way to sell a Claude Skill as a file. When that works, what you give up after the sale, and when hosting it is the better choice.

If you've built a Claude Skill and want to charge for it, Gumroad is the obvious first stop. Search Gumroad and you'll find Claude Skills for everything from report automation to grant writing, sold as a ZIP for a one-time price.

That works well for some Skills and badly for others. This guide covers how selling on Gumroad works, what you give up after the sale, and when hosting the Skill instead makes more sense.

How selling a Skill on Gumroad works

Hand-drawn shopping bag holding a zip file, with an arrow to a buyer downloading it.
  1. Zip your Skill folder (SKILL.md plus any scripts and reference files) and upload it as a product.
  2. Set a price, and share the link with your audience.
  3. The buyer downloads the ZIP and installs it: in claude.ai under Customize > Skills, or as a folder in Claude Code.

Gumroad's fees, from its pricing page: 10% + 50¢ per sale through your profile or direct links, and 30% when a new customer finds you through Gumroad's Discover marketplace. There's no monthly fee. Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad is the merchant of record, so it handles sales tax for you.

It's fast, cheap to start, and your buyers already know how to pay on Gumroad.

What you give up after the sale

The trade-off is that the sale ends your control over the Skill:

  • The buyer has your instructions. Claude needs to read the SKILL.md to use it, so the buyer can open it too.
  • Copies can spread, and a refund doesn't take the files back.
  • Updates mean reinstalling. Even after you upload a new version, each buyer has to download it and install it again. Many won't.
  • You can't see use. Gumroad shows you sales, not who actually runs the Skill or whether it works for them.
  • It works where it's installed. A Skill uploaded to one person's claude.ai account doesn't follow them to ChatGPT or Cursor.

Don't Gumroad license keys solve this?

Not for a Skill. Gumroad offers license keys, but they're designed for software that checks the key itself. Gumroad's own help page says license keys "will NOT help you limit access" to the digital files you sell.

A SKILL.md is a text file. It can't check a license key unless it calls a server to do it, and at that point the valuable part should live on the server anyway. That's hosting.

What hosting a Skill looks like

Instead of handing over the folder, you keep the Skill on a server and sell access to it. Customers connect once from the AI app they already use. When they ask for the job your Skill does, their app sends the request to your server, the server checks they still have access, runs the Skill, and returns the result.

The customer gets the work. The SKILL.md never leaves your hands. How to sell a Claude Skill without giving away the SKILL.md covers the options in detail.

Side by side

  • Setup: Gumroad takes minutes. Hosting takes a platform, or a developer.
  • Fees: Gumroad takes 10% + 50¢ per direct sale, 30% through Discover. expertrelay charges a flat platform fee instead of a share of sales.
  • Who has the files: with Gumroad, every buyer. With hosting, only you.
  • Refunds and cancellations: Gumroad refunds the money, but the files stay with the buyer. With hosting, access ends.
  • Updates: with Gumroad, each buyer reinstalls. With hosting, everyone gets the new version on their next run.
  • Usage: Gumroad shows sales. Hosting can show who uses the Skill and how often.
  • Where it works: a Gumroad Skill works where the buyer installs it. A hosted Skill can work from Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.
  • Sales tax: Gumroad handles it as merchant of record. With hosting, check how your platform handles it.

Which should you choose?

Gumroad is the better fit when:

  • The Skill is cheap, free, or a lead magnet.
  • It's a template buyers are meant to open and customize.
  • Your buyers are developers who expect to own the files.
  • You don't plan to update it much.

Hosting is the better fit when:

  • The method inside is the product, and you'd mind it being shared.
  • You improve the Skill often and want every customer on the latest version.
  • You want subscriptions or memberships, where access should end when payment does.
  • Your buyers aren't technical, or use ChatGPT or Cursor rather than Claude.

You can also do both: a free or cheap Skill on Gumroad to build an audience, and the full version as hosted access.

Moving from Gumroad to hosted access

expertrelay is built for this. Upload the Skill ZIP you already sell, test it privately, and create an offer. Customers connect once from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, access follows purchases, refunds and cancellations, and you keep 100% of your Skill revenue. You can also grant access by hand, so your existing Gumroad buyers can move over without paying again.

FAQ

Can I sell a Claude Skill on Gumroad?

Yes. Plenty of creators do: zip the Skill folder, upload it as a product, and set a price.

How much does Gumroad take?

10% + 50¢ per sale through your own links, or 30% when a new customer finds you through Gumroad's Discover marketplace, as of October 2026. There's no monthly fee.

Do Gumroad license keys protect a Claude Skill?

No. License keys only work when the product checks them, and a SKILL.md can't do that on its own. Gumroad says license keys won't limit access to the digital files you sell.

Can buyers share a Skill they bought on Gumroad?

Yes, nothing stops them once they have the files. That's the main reason to host a Skill whose method is the product.

What's a good Gumroad alternative for selling AI Skills?

For files, Lemon Squeezy, Payhip and Whop work much like Gumroad. To sell access without handing over the files, use a hosting platform built for Skills, like expertrelay.
